“From the moment [LaPolt] opened her mouth to spell out the reality of recording contract verbiage and label perceptions of artist development in the current music business model, I was mesmerized…and grateful. LaPolt believes in empowering artists/bands to take their career matters into their own hands rather than getting sucked into, and lost in, the industry’s chaos.”  Music Dish

Entertainment lawyer Dina LaPolt understands the precarious and ever-shifting balance of art, business, branding and technology better than anyone. In the course of her 16-year legal career, she has confronted the once hard-and-fast rules of copyright, ownership and commerce in response to current technological advantages and creative opportunities for music makers. Always a champion for artists’ rights, Dina has developed an enormous amount of expertise about the legal and ethical aspects of the recording industry that is unsurpassed in her field.

“The way people consume music and the ways in which we monetize music is what is changing and we need to embrace these changes, not fight them,” explains LaPolt.

LaPolt’s course, “Legal and Practical Aspects of the Music Business”, now in its 13th consecutive year at UCLA Extension, is an essential tool in the understanding of both the contractual and business issues that affect the way in which music is tapped into and monetized, and how money is generated from it. Diverse and extensive in its scope, the course is designed for virtually every individual, whether you are an artist, agent, manager, lawyer, accountant, music industry executive, producer, songwriter, music publisher, technologist, or an investor, to educate yourself in the current music industry legalities.

The course covers a range of critical material:

  • Topics and agreements relating to music publishers, record labels, producers and remixers, merchandise companies, sponsorships and endorsement deals, and the artist’s executive team
  • Understanding the various ways in which rights are exploited and monetized
  • Understanding how revenue streams are generated
  • Rights relating to trademark and the right of publicity
  • Legal aspects of social networking sites and online multi-channel networks
  • Discussions relating to building the artist’s brand as a business
  • Issues relating to current legislation and the effect on the creative community

The course starts on January 7, 2014, with classes scheduled for the UCLA campus on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10 pm. For more information about how to register, visit the UCLA Extension website at: Register here for Dina LaPolt's UCLA class

For all of her acclaim in the classroom, Ms. LaPolt has also taken the legal and ethical battle to the front lines by assisting legislators in the state of Hawaii in the drafting of SB 465, also known as the Steven Tyler Act. SB 465 is a groundbreaking piece of right-to-privacy legislation intended to prevent paparazzi from recording or photographing pubic figures in spaces where they could expect a reasonable right to privacy. Ms. LaPolt helped shape the bill and traveled to Hawaii earlier in 2013 to testify before the state legislature in support of the bill, accompanied by two of her clients, Steven Tyler and Mick Fleetwood. She also encouraged Hollywood notables to support the bill by sending letters to the Hawaii State Senate, which helped persuade the Senate to pass SB 465 on the first read. The bill is currently before the House awaiting a vote.
