The Craving: Killer Croissants

Start your morning off with these tasty and aromatic carbs.

Let's face it: Breakfast cravings are centered around carbohydrates. The good news is that we actually need carbs in the morning to get our metabolism going. Here are three places in town to find killer croissants to start your day.

1) Tarte Tatin Bakery

Hello, almonds! The sweet almond croissant at Tarte Tatin Bakery is one flaky pastry. But beyond the texture, it tasted like it was filled with sweet buttercream (the establishment denied this was the case). Whatever the secret ingredient is, the fluffy shell was oozing with buttery and nutty goodness. Insider tip: Request powdered sugar, like I did, to sprinkle on top.

Price for a killer croissant: $2.75.

Tarte Tatin Bakery, 9123 W. Olympic Blvd., 310-550-0011.

2) Champs-Elysees

has a plain croissant that is soft, buttery and subtly sweet. The taste was in line with tradition, but the pastry was so fresh and the aroma so flavorful that this croissant stood out.

Price for a killer croissant: $3.50.

Champs-Elysees, 275 S. Robertson Blvd., 310-652-3116.

3) Bailey's Bakery

The chocolate croissant at has a buttery shell encasing a frosting-esque center. Take it home, warm it up and the chocolate will ooze onto the plate, making for a warm breakfast treat.

Price for a killer croissant: $2.45.

Bailey's Bakery, 327 N. Crescent Drive, 310-274-8931.

I must agree that the croissants at Champs-Elysees stand out. Their "pain au chocolat" is authentic, and divine. Such a great little neighborhood stop for a baguette as well!
