Music Hall Gets Lease on Life

Beverly Hills' last movie theater has extended its lease for one year.

Laemmle's Music Hall 3 is staying put—for now.

Patch first that the theater might close after 40 years in Beverly Hills due to low attendance, poor revenue and increasing rent. But Laemmle Theatres President Greg Laemmle has worked out a deal to extend the lease at 9036 Wilshire Blvd. for another year.

“We negotiated a one-year option with a defined rent with the building owner’s leasing agent,” he said. “Everything comes down to economics, and real estate is a for-profit business.”

So what can we do to keep Beverly Hills’ last movie house open? Laemmle urges the community to follow the theater on Facebook and Twitter (@musichall3), and to add ideas to a “wish list” of what would keep people coming back to the Music Hall.

Discounted prices are already in place with New Deal Tuesdays and Senior Wednesdays. There is also a special bargain price for some daytime shows. You can subscribe to the Laemmle Theatres newsletter for updates on promotions.

Laemmle said he is “happy for the staff and the people in the area” who can continue to come to the Music Hall. But to outlast the next year, the community must support its local theater instead of driving to others in nearby towns.

One thing that sets this movie house apart from others is its screenings of independent and lesser-known films. Coming up in March are The Power of the Powerless, which explores Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution, and The Desert of Forbidden Art, a documentary about art created under oppressive Soviet rule.
