BH Chamber Hires New Director of Economic Development and Government Affairs

Andy Sywak brings a background in community journalism and state government to the Beverly Hills Chamber.

The following is a press release from the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce.

After an extensive and thorough search process, Andy Sywak joins the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce as the new Director of Economic Development and Government Affairs. Sywak assumed his new duties at the Chamber on April 16, 2012.

Andy Sywak brings a background in community journalism and state government to the Beverly Hills Chamber. After three years working as a journalist and production designer for community publications in San Francisco, Andy founded the Castro Courier neighborhood newspaper. He managed the paper’s editorial content and was responsible for all ad sales and production issues. This experience showed him the immense reward of working in a close-knit community within a larger city.

During this time, Andy served as the articles editor for New Geography.com, a web magazine covering economic development and the evolution of the urban form. In addition to writing for New Geography, Andy has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, The East Bay Express among other publications and has worked as a researcher on numerous think-tank reports and grants.

After selling the Castro Courier in 2010, Andy worked for the California State Auditor’s office in Sacramento as a performance auditor and in the state whistleblower’s office.

Andy’s experience in journalism has assisted him in his economic development work. He has provided research and plans for the City of Ontario, contributed research for the automobile industry in the southeast and worked with a former Los Angeles councilman on various economic development reports for the trucking industry in Los Angeles.

Andy received his B.A. in political science from UC Santa Barbara and master’s degree in public policy from UCLA. A native of Berkeley, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife, baby daughter and cocker-shepherd Lola.

Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce looks forward to a successful year ahead with Sywak leading the organizations Economic Development & Government Affairs division.
