Snag that Stylish Red Carpet Look

Here are some head-to-toe tips on how you can look like a million bucks without breaking the bank

Red carpet after red carpet event, we’ve watched our favorite celebrities, idols and—for some—role models, grace the camera with their good looks and stylish dresses. Gazing longingly at the TV or the magazines, you wonder what they're wearing and how can you create that look. If you are anything like me, you're probably on a budget and laying down thousands of dollars for a designer gown isn’t a reality.

So what looks are worth mimicking or taking note of? One timeless trend is shimmer and gold. At the GRAMMY awards held earlier this month, Heidi Klum rocked a glamorous and chic gold metallic dress that really got people excited. The thing about gold and wearing it the right way is finding the perfect hue of the color that suits you. You want to stand out, not be washed out, so try to find the right shade of gold that makes your skin glow. The other thing to know about wearing gold is that if you aren’t careful, it can look tacky and cheap. So, instead of head to toe gold, find pops of gold that suit your ensemble, some gold shoes, jewelry or even a top paired with an understated bottom.

Another red carpet trend are celebrities who show up posing with some long and luscious straight locks. The Kardashians have really revived this look. Sleek hair with lots of shine seems to be a reoccurring theme on the red carpet. Most people who are trying to get the look have resorted to expensive treatments that promise straight, run-your-hands-through-your-hair locks. Some do work, but if you are working on a budget, just give a throwback to the 90s with a straightener and some spray-on shine. A flat iron is still a girl’s best friend. The good ones won’t burn your hair and can give you the temporary look you're aiming for.

And finally, the last trend to take note of, which again has been making a fierce comeback, is the micro minis with sky-high heels look. Jennifer Lopez effortlessly rocks this style. The key is to know what length is good for you. Short yes, but no need to get scandalous—the idea is to be sexy, yet figure-flattering. Also, if you don’t have legs like Lopez, a pair of opaque tights paired with your mini and stilettos can go a long way and give the red carpet effect you’re looking for.

The best thing about the awards season and red carpet style is that it gives you a chance to breathe new life into your wardrobe and be inspired by your favorite stars. The other great thing is that you have license to get creative. No one ever said getting a red carpet look for cheap was easy, but if you get smart about it, you can pick out what you love and re-create new outfits with clothes you already own.
