Academy Goes Silent! 'The Artist' Wins Best Picture, Director and Actor

Meryl Streep and Christopher Plummer also take home the prize.

The 84th Academy Awards winners have been announced.

The Artist won best picture, director and actor, as well as original score and costume design. 

Martin Scorsese's Hugo won five Academy Awards—for cinematography, art direction, visual effects, sound editing and sound mixing.

Meryl Streep won the best actress Oscar for The Iron Lady. Octavia Spencer of The Help won best supporting actress.

Christopher Plummer from The Beginners made history by being the oldest actor, at 82, to ever win best supporting actor.

Alas, George Clooney didn't win best actor for The Descendants, nor did he win for writing Ides of March.
