Gas Line Rupture Leads to Local Evacuations

The rupture occurred at a construction site near Third Street.

Scores of people were evacuated from an area just east of Beverly Hills City Hall today after a construction crew using heavy excavation machinery ruptured a gas line.

The gas line was ruptured at a construction site near Third Street and Foothill Road about 3 p.m., Lt. Lincoln Hoshino of the Beverly Hills Police Department said.

Workers from Southern California Gas went to the scene and the Beverly Hills Fire Department checked to make certain there were not additional pockets of gas that could be a problem, Hoshino said.

The gas lines were restored and evacuations were called off about 6 p.m., Hoshino said.

Several entertainment companies had to evacuate, the Los Angeles Times reported, with one top film executive, Jim Berk of Participant, saying he sent 180 employees to nearby hotels "to have a drink and work remotely."
