Bites Nearby: BeverLiz Cafe

Looking for a good meal under $10?

Dining out in Beverly Hills can be a pricey affair. But there are plenty of places in town where you can feed yourself for under ten bucks—you just need to know where to look.

BeverLiz Cafe: South Beverly Drive is home to one of the best kept secrets in Beverly Hills. With amazing food and a huge variety of menu items for breakfast, lunch and early dinner, there is no better deal—or better quality for the price—than the family-run , owned by Art and Ann Hagopian with assistance from daughter Suzy and Manager Leo.

I've been dining at BeverLiz since 2004 and go there several times a week, often twice in a day. Its menu is that diverse. Some might say it has the best breakfast items on the South Beverly "Restaurant Row." Want something not on the menu? Just make a request and the cooks will prepare your dish any way you want, without all kinds of extra charges that you'd find at various deli's and IHOP. BeverLiz uses high-quality food all while keeping the price point under $10.

I often have my "Special Breakfast," consisting of avocado, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mustard on a bagel, along with a side of cottage cheese, fruit and a veggie patty—for $10! How can you afford NOT to eat healthy? They offer pancakes, turkey bacon and all sorts of omelettes. Lunch options include a low-mayo chicken salad sandwich on whole wheat with a side of fruit, a walnut chicken salad with apples or Chinese chicken salad, as well as panini "press" sandwiches.

There are also daily specials at BeverLiz that are always worth trying. The buckwheat chicken salad I had recently is a winner, as is the veggie and tofu stir fry. And don't forget to try "Phyllis's Chicken" which is grilled chicken breast, mixed veggies and brown rice with an outstanding Dijon mustard sauce—it's large enough for two!

All the above items mentioned are, of course, $10 or less.

BeverLiz, which has been on South Beverly Drive since 1984 (the Hagopians bought it in 2001) is not so secret anymore. Lots of nearby residents and business people make regular visits to the petite but charming cafe.

"A touch of Paris here in Beverly Hills," loyal customer Diana Gordon said of BeverLiz. "And the chicken rice soup is unbelievable. It's the only soup my granddaughter Emma will eat!"

BeverLiz Cafe is located at 308 S. Beverly Drive. Hours: Mon-Fri 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sun closed. On-street metered parking is available and a city-owned parking lot is located at 216 S. Beverly Drive.
