Easter Fun Facts: 700 Million Peeps to Be Eaten

Chocolate bunnies, jelly beans and marshmallow Peeps will be filling Easter baskets across the nation Sunday.

Here are some fun facts to celebrate Easter:

  • Marshmallow Madness: This Easter, more than 700 million marshmallow Peeps (chicks, bunnies and eggs) will be consumed, making them the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy.
  • Say What? When taking a bite into a chocolate bunny, 76 percent of Americans prefer to bite off the ears first.
  • Planet Bean. More than 16 billion jelly beans are made for Easter. If you lined them all side-by-side, they would circle the Earth nearly three times.
  • Easter Tradition: Eighty-eight percent of adults make Easter baskets for their kids.
  • Egg-cellent Gesture: To help Americans in need, egg farmers across the country are donating more than 11 million eggs to food banks.
  • Not Cooking: According to the National Restaurant Association, more than 33 million Americans are expected to celebrate the Easter holiday by dining out.
  • Bunny Bonanza: Ninety million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter each year. Adults prefer milk chocolate (65 percent) over dark chocolate (27 percent).
  • Bean Business: Children's favorite jelly beans are the red ones.
  • A Lot of Candy: Americans are expected to spend more than $2 billion on Easter candy this year.
  • Give it Up: The 10 most popular things given up for lent include alcohol, chocolate and sweets, cursing, Facebook, television, junk food, soda, smoking, texting and gossiping.
  • All in a Day's Work: It takes 24-26 hours for a hen to complete the process of laying an egg
