City Deal With UTA Hits Snag Over Signage

United Talent Agency wants to rename the Beverly Hills street where its new offices are located.

The City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to move forward with plans to adopt an agreement with United Talent Agency that keeps the company in Beverly Hills for the next 15 years, but did not commit to UTA's request to install street signage identifying the talent agency's new Civic Center Drive address as "United Talent Agency Drive." Mayor William Brien, along with Councilmen Barry Brucker and Julian Gold, voted to approve the agreement. Vice Mayor John Mirisch and Councilwoman Lili Bosse voted against it. Brien said that the subject of street signage would be taken up by a subcommittee in an effort to reach some consensus on the issue. The council appeared unanimous in its opposition to renaming a portion of Civic Center Drive as part of the …

At Better Bike, through which I advocate for cycling and other multimodal mobility options, we strongly believe that cyclists are an untapped - and indeed unrecognized - opportunity for increasing commercial foot traffic without adding to vehicular congestion. We read the city's recent Small Business Task Force report (to Council) and saw no mention of the role that cyclists play in our region, …   more ›

Tax Tips: Employee Business Expenses

The IRS offers tax tips for employees who want to deduct business expenses. Taxes are due April 17.

With the tax deadline quickly approaching, some people might be wondering what work-related expenses they can deduct on their tax return. Here's a tip: don't try to deduct gym memberships, country club dues, cosmetic surgery, haircuts or veterinary bills, according to NPR's Planet Money blog. Nevertheless, there are several business expenses that the Internal Revenue Service says are OK to deduct. Here's a list provided by the IRS of expenses that generally qualify for an itemized deduction: "You must keep records to prove the business expenses you deduct," according to the IRS. However, "if an employer reimburses you under an accountable plan, you should not include the payments in your gross income, and you may not deduct any of the …

Matzah Pizza for Passover

Fresh Brothers has a solution for those who can't eat bread products during the Passover holiday.

Fresh Brothers Pizza has a novel solution to their annual dip in sales during the Passover holiday: matzah pizza. Jews do not eat leavened bread during the 8-day holiday of Passover. That means no pizza either. “As Jews, we rarely can go out to eat during Passover,” said Adam Goldberg, founder and chief executive officer of the Fresh Brothers pizza chain. “But no one wants to cook all of the time.” This is the first year the chain will offer the matzah pizza, which Goldberg hopes will help reduce the sales dip he sees at all of his six regional stores during Passover. If sales go well, it is likely that the matzah pizza - available this year through Sat. April 14 - will become an annual Passover item. Matzah pizza is available in a …
