Prizewinning Cellist Francisco Vila Plays Greystone Mansion Sunday

The "Music in the Mansion Series" will pair Vila with pianist Jennie Jung.

On Sunday, May 13 at 2 p.m. Beverly Hills’ historic Greystone Mansion will host an intimate concert featuring prizewinning Ecuadorian-Spanish cellist Francisco Vila and pianist Jenny Jung. Vila—called “an exceptionally talented young cellist and musician…[headed] for an important place in the world of music” by renowned cellist Janos Starker—has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Wednesday's L.A. Jewish Film Festival Showings in Beverly Hills

This will be the event's last screening in Beverly Hills until next year.

Laemmle's Music Hall is screening Follow Me: The Yoni Netanyahu Story Wednesday as part of the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival. The 84-minute film is about the brother of current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Yoni was an elite Army commando who was killed while leading a rescue attempt to retrieve Israeli hostages from a hijacked flight at Uganda's Entebbe Airport in 1976. Israeli Consul General David Siegel will introduce the film and Dr. Iddo Netanyahu, Yoni and Prime Minister Netanyahu's brother from Israel, is attending as a special guest. Prior to Follow Me, the 20-minute film Cohen on the Bridge about a 1976 hostage rescue in Entebbe, Uganda will screen. There will be a Q&A with the director of the film, Andrew Wainrib…

Tuesday's L.A. Jewish Films Festival Showings in Beverly Hills

Temple Emanuel and Laemmle's Music Hall are each featuring festival films Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival will continue Tuesday with screenings at Temple Emanuel and Laemmle's Music Hall in Beverly Hills. Diane Rosenstein Fine Art Opens in Beverly Hills

The expressionist paintings of Cleve Gray are now showing.

Diane Rosenstein Fine Art (DRFA) is the newest gallery to open in Beverly Hills. Located at 9399 Wilshire Boulevard, the building features 4,000 square feet of exhibition space. The gallery's first exhibition is titled Cleve Gray: The Connecticut Paintings and is showing until June 10. Patch caught up with Rosenstein to discuss the new gallery, which opened in mid-April. Beverly Hills Patch: How did you come to decide to open a gallery in Beverly Hills? Diane Rosenstein: I had been a private dealer, and recently worked with Participant Media to place art in their new building on Foothill Road. Aiana and Hausmann String Quartets at Greystone Mansion

On Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. Beverly Hills’ historic Greystone Mansion will host an intimate concert featuring two starlet string quartets: Aiana Quartet and Hausmann Quartet. The Hausmann Quartet, described by Cleveland Plain Dealer as “packed with biting and lyrical substance,” was formed in the summer of 2004 and is currently the resident string quartet at San Diego State University. As winners of a Chamber Music America Residency Grant, they will be the Quartet-in-Residence at Stanford University’s Educational Program for gifted Youth Summer Initiative. Opinion: Westside Subway Extension Hurts Museum Row

An op-ed in the Los Angeles Times says the Purple Line extension is not good for some of Los Angeles' smaller museums.

The Westside Subway Extension is a hot topic for residents, business owners and schools, but how will it affect the local arts community? An opinion piece in Tuesday's Los Angeles Times says the extension of the Purple Line through Museum Row to Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood will mark the end of some smaller museums and galleries near LACMA and the Petersen Automotive Museum. The news came in Metro's final report and recommendations on the Westside Subway Extension in the details regarding buildings that will be appropriated for the planned Fairfax stop. The author of the piece is Greg Goldin, who writes about architecture for Los Angeles Magazine and co-curated an exhibition at one of the galleries. 'To Kill a Mockingbird' to Be Shown on Film's 50th Anniversary

There will be a screening April 11 in Beverly Hills.

A digitally restored copy of To Kill a Mockingbird will be shown at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills April 11 to mark its 50th anniversary. The film will be introduced by talk show host Tavis Smiley and will also include an onstage discussion with Mary Badham, who received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the daughter of attorney Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck). Tickets are $5 and $3 for students and academy members and can be purchased online, in person at the Academy box office or by mail. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m. The theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Blvd. More information on the screening is available here. …

Academy Goes Silent! 'The Artist' Wins Best Picture, Director and Actor

Meryl Streep and Christopher Plummer also take home the prize.

The 84th Academy Awards winners have been announced. The Artist won best picture, director and actor, as well as original score and costume design.  Martin Scorsese's Hugo won five Academy Awards—for cinematography, art direction, visual effects, sound editing and sound mixing. Meryl Streep won the best actress Oscar for The Iron Lady. Octavia Spencer of The Help won best supporting actress. Christopher Plummer from The Beginners made history by being the oldest actor, at 82, to ever win best supporting actor. There's No Place Like...Beverly Hills

A pair of Dorothy's iconic ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" has been acquired by the Beverly Hills-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Beverly Hills-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday that it acquired a pair of Dorothy’s famed ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz with financial assistance from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Steven Spielberg.  The slippers will become a prized exhibit at the planned Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which will eventually be housed at the former May Co. building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile district.
