Volunteers Continue Work on Greystone Demonstration Garden

Raised vegetable beds have been built and are ready for planting.

With straw hats and plenty of sunscreen, more than 50 volunteers worked together Saturday to complete Phase 1 of the .

At the direction of Eagle Scout candidate Eric Shim, the group constructed and set into place four raised vegetable beds, then filled them with compost and topsoil.

A member of Boy Scout Troop 33, Shim is working on the garden for his Eagle Scout project. Through donations from friends and family, the  junior was able to supply the wood and hardware for the beds.

Shim said he was especially enthusiastic about the garden project because the goods grown will be donated to food banks.

Troop 33 is led by Scout Master Joel Ordesky and supported by Assistant Scout Master Stephen Schwartz. Girl Scout Troop 10885, led by parent Martha Galvin, and members of the BHHS Earthlings Ecology Club, led by Charlotte Frank, were also on hand to help out with the project.  provided refreshments.

Barbara Linder, who is spearheading the demonstration garden, thanked city contractor Crown Disposal for its topsoil and compost donation, Aqua-Flo for the drip irrigation, and Bryan Peele with the Domestic Estate Managers Association for additional materials.

Volunteer Soozie Eastman, a filmmaker, chairs the garden's Planning, Planting and Harvesting Committee. She compiled a lively short video documenting the workday.

Planting starts Wednesday, June 27, and continues Saturday, June 30.
