The Great Los Angeles Walk to Trek Through Town
Join this urban hike from Downtown L.A. to the Pacific Ocean via Wilshire Boulevard on Saturday—rain or shine.
The Great Los Angeles Walk 2010, "Back to Wilshire Boulevard," kicks off its fifth annual urban hike from Downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean on Saturday.
After announcements at 9:30 a.m., an anticipated 250 participants will leave Pershing Square promptly at 10 a.m. and head west, walking through Beverly Hills via Wilshire Boulevard. The event will be held rain or shine. The walk is expected to end at around 4 p.m., with a group celebration at Border Grill in Santa Monica at 5 p.m.
Meet up with the trekkers anywhere along the great wide way. The fleet of feet should cross through our city at about 1:45 p.m. after a lunch break at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
This year the pedestrian adventure returns to Wilshire Boulevard after exploring other crosstown concourses in walks past. At just 15.6 miles, it's the shortest Great Los Angeles Walk organized to date. It's also the first with rain in the forecast, so dress for comfort and wet weather.
The walk's main man is journalist and Franklin Avenue blogger Michael Schneider. He was moved to create the annual event after reading Wilshire Boulevard: Grand Concourse of Los Angeles.
What's the agenda of Schneider and friends? To walk for the love of metro L.A. and all its communities. It's not a race. Follow the Great Los Angeles Walk 2010 Twitter feed to see the group's progress
Catching the sights at sidewalk level at a somewhat leisurely pace is the ultimate eco-way to see Beverly Hills—and the rest of Los Angeles. It's also the perfect time to do some 90210 window shopping.
The Great Los Angeles Walk 2010 is free, but make sure to bring money for lunch. Gourmet food trucks line the Miracle Mile section of Wilshire Boulevard near LACMA. The museum has a cafeteria too.
So what's the smartest way to get to Pershing Square (at West 6th and South Olive streets) from Beverly Hills? Leave the car at home and take the bus. Newbie riders should allow for a little extra time. Check the MTA website to find the best route for you. The fare is $1.50 each way—exact change, please. Line 20 is a good option for riders going from Downtown L.A. to Santa Monica and back, with a stop at Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards in Beverly Hills.
So go on down the boulevard—the green way—with some of your greenest pals Saturday. It's a great walk! You can get more information about participating here.

Well, I only walked from One Wilshire to Beverly Hills whilst the rest of the dedicated bunch went onto the beach. Fascinating. Folks from LACMA and Los Angeles Conservancy spoke along the way to the group about art and architecture. My feet are a little sore, but I was still able to walk to the Saban Theater this afternoon to hear the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra.
