Standout Student: Alex Kern

Alex Kern is interning with NASA.

Some of Beverly's finest are skipping summertime at the beach for a lesson in the classroom. Others are participating in community service programs or internships. Patch caught up with these standout Normans to talk about their plans. We'll be featuring new students throughout the summer months.

Incoming junior Alex Kern, 16, has been accepted for an internship with the exclusive Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at the California Institute of Technology in the San Gabriel Valley. The JPL is a NASA field center that specializes in the robotic exploration of the solar system.

"I've always been interested in robotics," said Kern, who will be spending ten weeks this summer working side by side with NASA engineers. "JPL is the biggest robotics team."

Alex's mission is to corroborate on the next Mars rover that is scheduled to launch in Fall 2011.

"[The rover] will be known as 'Curiousity,'" Kern said. "My area of focus will be on testing the motor control system, which allows the robot to drive and move."
