1,000 Sign Petition Supporting Westside Subway

"We Do Our Part LA" wants Metro to build the Westside Subway Extension, regardless of whether it goes under Beverly Hills High School.

A coalition of business organizations, labor unions and community activists known as We Do Our Part LA has started a petition calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to move forward with its plans for the Westside Subway Extension.

The petition reads:

Hey MTA! Please approve the Westside Subway Extension! We support the subway because it will create a green alternative and much needed mass transit for the 300,000 people who travel to the Westside every day. And, it will create much needed jobs right here in L.A.

As of Sunday the petition has more than 1,000 signatures, according to Lisa Cohen of We Do Our Part LA.

"The MTA is in the process of holding hearings about the proposed Westside Subway Extension project, which the We Do Our Part coalition strongly supports," Cohen said. "This is exactly the kind of infrastructure project the coalition believes can put people back to work, get the economy going and benefit L.A. in the long run."

The Westside Subway Extension would expand the Purple Line, which goes from downtown L.A. to Wilshire Boulevard/Western Avenue, to a station at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Brentwood. The proposed route would bring subway stops to Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood along the way.

Los Angeles Councilman Paul Koretz will be a featured speaker at the event.
