'Octomom' Doctor Loses License

Michael Kamrava's medical license has been revoked.

The Medical Board of California today revoked the license of the Beverly Hills fertility doctor who treated "Octomom" Nadya Suleman.

Administrative Law Judge Daniel Juarez had recommended in a fall 2010 disciplinary hearing that Dr. Michael Kamrava be placed on five years' probation by the state medical board. The board, however, rejected that recommendation and revoked his license, effective July 1.

Kamrava had been accused of gross negligence and incompetence in his treatment of Suleman and two other patients.

At last fall’s disciplinary hearing, Deputy Attorney General Judith Alvarado said Kamrava implanted Suleman with 12 embryos in the pregnancy that gave her octuplets, according to the Associated Press. National guidelines issued by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine specify that no more than two embryos are to be used for in vitro treatments for a healthy woman under 35, the AP reported. Suleman was less than 35 years old at the time of her fertility treatments.

Kamrava treated Suleman beginning in 1997, leading to the birth of all 14 of her children. The famed octuplets were born Jan. 26, 2009.
