Council Receives Update on Library Renovations

Construction work commenced earlier this week on what will be the Beverly Hills Public Library's new "Teen Zone." The children's area will move upstairs the first weekend in February.

Construction work has begun at the , a staff member told the City Council on Tuesday.

The construction upgrade seeks to improve areas of the library that focus on , said Nancy Hunt Coffey, assistant director of community services. Workers started building the new "Teen Zone" Tuesday.

While construction workers revamp parts of the ground floor during the next 12-18 months, the children's area will relocate to the library's upstairs auditorium and meeting rooms.

The relocation of the children's section will take place Feb. 4-6, which is "a week after finals at the schools," Hunt Coffey said. "So we've been doing our best to get the word out to all of the PTAs [and] all of our patrons."

The city has produced a television advertisement featuring hard hat-clad youngsters in the role of construction workers and architects that will run on Beverly Hills' government channel.

The renovated children's area will have areas designated for quiet and noisy activities, an area specifically for young children and their families, "two new study rooms and a larger, more flexible theater space for the kids, as well as new technologies and more conveniently located bathrooms," according to the TV spot's young participants.

"That was an incredible, endearing video, and I think with [the children] doing the construction we'll be done in 12 months," Councilwoman Lili Bosse joked after viewing the ad.

"And on budget," Mayor Barry Brucker added.
